In May the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) released details of a raft of new standards for different types of low voltage electric cable. This happened with the publication of a new group of standards designated EN 50525 for low voltage energy cables with rated voltages of no more than 450/750 V (Uo/U). This covers cables used to supply domestic and industrial equipment or devices and those in power installations. This includes flexible cables which are referred to as cords, and although the rated voltages in the EN 50525 series refer to AC voltages the cables covered by these documents can be used in DC applications too.
