Carbon fiber composites became commercially available in the 1970s. Since then, they have played a role in improving the performance of military and civil aircraft, as well as space launch vehicles and satellite systems.Research during the first 30 years focused on improvements in material performance and processing. Today the focus has changed to reducing part manufacturing costs, and industry is driving research in that direction.This paper describes three areas in which Cytec Fiberite has been actively focused to aid such cost reductions: Use of bismaleimide (BMI) reins for high thermal and mechanical performance Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) structures.Developing resin systems with improved processing characteristics to enable production of high quality parts by the RTM process.Increasing the toughness of its resin systems tailored specifically for the RTM process.
