In the May-June 2014 SAMPE Journal issue I discussed several composites technology programs that Europe and Japan were conducting in areas associated with automotive composites, high-volume production aspects, recycled carbon fiber technologies and cleaner energy applications. Both regions are putting considerable emphasis on how to develop such materials and technologies. I am pleased to say that the US is looking to fund a very important program in several of these same technological areas. The US Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is funding a program anticipated to cover five years. A proposal request is currently being answered by several teams bidding on establishing the "Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Composite Materials and Structures." Proposal inputs are due to DOE at the end of June with award to a winning team around September 2014.
