High Temperature Resin Composites: New Activity on the Autoclave/OOA Front

The topic of Out-of-Autoclave (OOA) technology continues to be a hot topic within the composites industry. My Tech Tidbits column later in this journal issue discusses some of the areas where OOA and Vacuum Bag Only (VBO) processes are advancing technologies with a myriad of variations. Some are "true" OOA and VBO approaches whereas others have been "Outside of the Autoclave" for decades. Most of the OOA work to date has been primarily with epoxy-based resin systems in attempts not only to go outside the autoclave, but to achieve the best hot-wet mechanical properties with toughened system characteristics. A classic example was the Boeing Launch Vehicle Fairing (epoxy prepreg) made several years ago.
