Exploring the Manufacturing of Composite Pressure Vessels: Technology at New Extremes

The breadth of composite pressure vessel applications is continuing to expand. With improvements in process engineering, materials, and design methods the applications seem endless. Reinforcing fibers are many times stronger and stiffer than metals. Newer resins can operate in environments where aluminum melts. Fatigue and corrosion resistance of composites is many times better than metals. The vast specific properties of composites; strength, modulus, and fatigue resistance can broaden the applications for composites for the open minded designer. This article explores pressure vessel applications at the extremes. Design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of composite vessels are presented using current applications. The possibilities used as examples in this article include pressure vessels for human transport to the Marianas Trench, vessels for food pasteurization at 6,000 bar, large vessels (two to three meters in diameter and 20 meters long) for marine transport of compressed natural gas, and delivery vessels for liquefied petroleum gas to replace existing steel tanks. Making the possibilities realities requires proper selection of materials, sound engineering design, practical tooling and manufacturing processes, and proven test methods to ensure design goals are achieved.
