Bismaleimide Composites Come of Age: BMI Science and Applications

Bismaleimide (BMI) composites are used onsome of the most important and complex, high performanceapplications ranging from military programs such as the AirForce's F-22 to Formula-1 race cars. BMI's most importantattribute is the unique combination of high service temperature,good toughness and epoxy-like processing. BMI matrixcomposites provide the highest mechanical properties availablethrough 350 deg F/wet, exhibiting damage tolerance equivalenttot he best epoxies. Certain BMIs are capable of extendedservice at 450 deg F to 550 deg F, approaching the performanceof the condensation polyimide, PMR-15. BMIs are also versatileRTM resins. This paper will discuss the advantages of BMIcomposites. A detailed analysis of the current applications willillustrate how the advantages of BMIs were exploited and howto apply tem to gain added value in your application.
