A&P Technology Selected for Phase II of a NASA-GRC Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program

The program goal is to design and fabricate two full-scale composite fan containment cases, one conventional reflective fan case and one softwall (Kevlar containment) system. The team involved in this program includes A&P Technology, several of the domestic aircraft engine prime contractors, and General Dynamics (formerly ATP-Intellitec). A&P Technology will utilize a new braiding process approach which enables low cost production of fan case structures. Once fabricated at A&P, the cure and machining of the fan cases will be performed at General Dynamics (General Dynamics is a major producer of low cost composite hardware for aerospace primes such as Honeywell Engines, Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter). Once machined, the fan cases are to be tested at NASA-GRC in the ballistics impact lab within the Structural Mechanics and Dynamics Branch. The performance of the cases in terms of impact resistance and post impact structural capability will then be compared.
