After SAMPE's phenomenal growth in the Eighties, beginning with 1,800 members in 1980, and ending the decade with 11,070 members, the Nineties became a roller coaster ride with ups and downs in membership and in finances. Our overseas chapters did well overall, but endured the same problems. The downturn in aerospace was the major contributing factor. SAMPE took a big step forward with the March/April 1990 Journal which was the first issue to be completely typeset and produced in-house. This afforded better control, improved communications and immediate action in copy changes as well as cutting costs. In April, the 35th ISS&E was sponsored by the Orange County Chapter and held in Anaheim, with an attendance of 12,000+. Accomplishments reported were: the SAMPE ISO's move into the new property on Parkview Drive in Covina; the first-ever full-scope audit of SAMPE's financial statement by the largest international firm in the world; converting SAMPE's outdated computers and manual typewriters to a new in-house IBM PS/ 2 Model 80; and a new IBO employee benefit package, which saved SAMPE 1,000 dollars per month.
