Second Generation Aramid Honeycomb Core Sawing Surface Finish Study

Several new second-generation honeycomb core materials based on DuPont? KEVLAR? brand papers have been developed and commercialized. These new honeycomb materials have excellent strength and sliffness-to-weight ratios, which makes them ideal for weight critical applications. Some weight-critical applications have found it is essential to have a smooth surface (low fuzz level) on all machined surfaces to enhance secondary coating operations or face sheet-to-honeycomb bonds when using ultra low weight film adhesives. Sawing and slicing are the most challenging machining operations to consistently achieve low-cut surface fuzz levels, especially for KEVLAR? fiber based honeycomb materials (e.g. KEVLAR N636). Through this study a ranking system has been established for quantifying honeycomb core cut surface fuzz levels. In addition, specific saw blades and operating conditions have been identified that help significantly reduce the honeycomb core's fuzz level.
