This well known but largely ignored herb is abundant in most lawns, especially those lacking in lime. To most men (including mine!) seeing the plants in full bloom is the signal to cut the lawn or "off with their heads". Today this could be given thelabel OWTH syndrome! What he doesn't realise is that daisies thrive where the grass is kept short! Sometimes called "Day's Eye" or "the eye of the day", the flowers of Bella Perennis open at dawn and close at sunset. The pretty white daisy evokes memories of childhood, sitting in the sun on the lawn using one's thumbnail to make a needle eye in each stem through which the next daisy is passed before repeating the process, ending with a daisy chain to put around the neck or wrist. This still fascinates little ones today even though the custom goes back to antiquity.
