Under normal conditions, I am not a firm believer in oil filter relief valves. I am more of a believer in the strength and quality of the entire filter. I also think it's important to take into consideration the use and the maintenance of the vehicle. For example, someone who only drives two blocks each day to the grocery store will develop a great deal of condensation and carbon deposits in the engine over several thousand miles. The creation of engine sludge will drastically shorten the service life of the oil and the filter as the sludge accumulates and plugs the filter. In this case, the driver needs to reduce the recommended mileage and time interval for oil and filter changes in the vehicle's maintenance program.
