Increased coal production from leading exporter Australia is helping to bring down world prices after they soared last year on surging demand from China to fuel its economic boom, a top international industry analyst said. This was occuring both for steel-making coking coal and for thermal coal, used for power generation, Mr Gerard McCloskey said in an interview with Reuters before the opening of a coal forecasting conference in Sydney. In 2005-06, Australian coking coal prices for export to Asian steel makers leapt by 120 per cent to 125 dollars a tonne as rising Chinese steel production set markets on fire.
