Fimmenits from the Middle Eocene of Geiseltal. Pollen agglomerates called fimmenits collected during previous micropaleobota-nical research in 1930s from the Middle Eocene coal deposits of Geiseltal are discussed. They may have originated as remains of flowers(pollen sacs), or accumulations by insects, but not by currents or wind transport during the deposition. Various kinds of pollen agglomera-tes differ by prevailing types of plant groups they are constituted - Ericaceae-, Spotaceae-, T. willrathae-, and Myrtaceae-dominated as wellas mixed agglomerates have been distinguished as main types. Some include masses of otherwise rare or extremely rare pollen, e.g. of thewillrathae or abbreviatus groups. Some pollen forms have not been so far known in Geiseltal at all. The microfossils in fimmenits have beenembedded into preparations without maceration and consequently they preserved in some cases very fine structures, namely intine. Mostsamples come from the upper Middle Coal (pollen subzone SPP 15C) of the former mines Cecilie and Leonhard. The fimmenit agglomera-tes yielded much more differentiated pollen assemblages than the so far known flora of Geiseltal attests. A more detailed taxonomical ana-lysis of the material will be incorporated in a monograph of the Geiseltal microflora in the future.
