The effects of irrigation, drought and fertilizing on the frequency of the fungal [non-pathogenic] endophyte Lophodermium piceae in green needles were assessed in a 30-yr-old experimental stand of Picea abies (planted in 1966) at Skogaby in southernSweden. The 5 experimental treatments, which started in 1988, were: (1) irrigation from mid-May to the end of September, (2) irrigation + fertilizing with N (as nitrate and ammonium) with complete mineral nutrients in aqueous solution (except for Ca which was added as limestone), (3) fertilizing with solid ammonium sulfate without irrigation, (4) drought (established by intercepting rain with a transparent plastic roof from April to October), and (5) no treatment (control). Needles were sampled in August and November 1992 and/or September 1996 (age classes 6, 2 and 3 yr, respectively). Frequencies of needles with L. piceae were lower in the irrigation and ammonium sulfate fertilizer treatments than in the control. Drought treatment frequencies were similar to the control values. Needles were susceptible to colonization for at least 3 yr, and colonization increased with needle age. The results indicate that the increased availability of water to the root system as well as ammonium sulfate fertilizingindirectly delays colonization of needles by L. piceae.
