Laide and Aultbea Community Woodland was bought in February 2003 by the communities of Laide and Aultbea for the enjoyment of the public. It all began three years earlier when the idea was raised twice in community council meetings. The first time itwas met with some incomprehension. The second time, over a year later, the news that the wood had again changed hands caused a pause for thought, and this time there appeared to be no reason why the community council should not give approval to pursue the idea. The first public meeting to discuss the very idea of buying Laide Wood was on 7 February 2002. There were 19 people present and a further 10 interested, and the feeling was positive. Things moved on apace from there.
