摘要

Current debate about Scotland's woods and forests, most recently stimulated by devolution and the development of the Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme, focuses on their role in creating social, environmental and economic benefits. The Scottish Forestry Strategy stresses the importance of integrating forestry with other sectors and recognising the multiple benefits that any one wood or forest can deliver. This may seem like overblown political rhetoric, particularly to forest owners and managers, who throughout the 20th century have been accustomed, in effect, to unobstructed control of their woods and trees. Equally, multiple benefits have not been given much attention in the face of an overwhelming commercial imperative. But Scotland has a long history of its woods being used for many, and often competing purposes not entirely dissimilar to those at work today. This paper is intended to draw on our current understanding of Scotland's woodland history and illustrate how this understanding of the pastcan contribute to the discussion about the future role of Scottish forestry. In particular, it will focus on the many uses of woods and forests since the middle ages, outlining these and the conflicts that arose between them.
