This piece, written on 13 September 2006, is an attempt to record an episode in the history of Scottish forestry which is still in play. By the time you read this it will be out of date. I make no apology for allowing an element of opinion to infiltrate an attempt to record facts. That is an inevitable challenge that faces contemporary historians! It is nearly four years since at one of our regular Forestry and Timber Association (FTA) meetings with FC Scotland we discussed the recent closure of theWoodland Grant Scheme and the forthcoming launch of the Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme which took place in June 2003. We were then, as now, in a period of purdah; grant applications were suspended.
