Debate on the role of the Forestry Commission in Scotland has increasingly entered the public domain. Some of this debate has been conducted in this journal, some elsewhere. The debate is an important one. The main articles, letters and papers includeDouglas Macmillan's Is the Forestry Commission still needed. (Scottish Forestry 59:3 Autumn 2005); Barry Gamble's UK Forestry in a State (The Borthwick Steven Lecture, University of Aberdeen, February 2006); Bob Mclntosh's The Role of the Public ForestEstate in Scotland (Paper to CONFOR, UKFPA, Environment Link and Regional Forest Fora October 2006); Peter Quelch's letter in Scottish Forestry 60:2 Summer 2006; and Andrew Cameron's letter in Scottish Forestry 60:4 Winter 2006. The Council of the RSFS has considered these various papers, as well as other internal responses which have emanated from them, in order to make this comment.
