摘要

This paper presents the results of an investigative study of the harvest and trade of moss from Scotland's forests. In total 308 people were contacted and questionnaires and structured interviews conducted with harvesters, traders, land-managers, bryologists and informants on the unauthorised moss harvest. Despite limited contact with harvesters and informal traders, results indicate that six commercial harvesting enterprises harvest moss from Scottish forests, as do 6% of florists, 17% of garden centres and numerous individuals; equal numbers of people overall harvest without authorisation. Harvesting targets four genera, Pleurozium, Polytrichum, Pseudoscleropodium and Sphagnum; and occurs mainly in plantations in the south of the country at Christmas and spring time, although unauthorised, and therefore illegal, harvests do occur in other habitats. The harvest and trade of Scottish moss is worth approximately pound0.5 million a year and supports 125 jobs, split evenly between authorised and unauthorised harvesters; on average very little money is made by land-managers through permit fees. We conclude that despite a decrease in the moss trade over the last 30 years, market opportunities exist for Scottish moss to replace current imports from theEU and New Zealand. Despite the ecological sensitivity demonstrated by many harvesters, widespread concerns over the sustainability and legal status of harvesting must be addressed in order to build confidence in the industry. Guidelines currently beingdeveloped by a wide variety of stakeholders are a positive way to achieve this and form a basis on which to promote the harvest and trade of Scottish moss.
