Cashel, The Forest for a Thousand Years, on the east shore of Loch Lomond close to Glasgow, is now a thriving endeavour. An enonnous amount has been achieved since its foundation in 1996. The inspiration behind the forest had its origins in 1993/94 when there was considerable discussion about the establishment of Demonstration Forests which could show best practice, especially in private woodland where costs were restrictive. David Goss, President of the Royal Scottish Forestry Society 1992-94, attended a meeting in Inverness on native Scots pine woodlands and was told about the formation of the Millennium Trust, founded to further the creation of native woods throughout Scotland, and that the Forestry Commission thought a practising forester shouldbe on the Board of the Trust . With the support of the succeeding President, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the Council of the Royal Scottish Forestry Society (RSFS), and with the opportunity to work with the Millennium Trust, it was decided that the RSFS should look for a relatively wild, but accessible, property with as great a range of site types as possible.
