Since its foundation in 1919 the Forestry Commission has had an extraordinary impact on the landscape, industry and environment of Scotland and on the lives of the Scottish people, particularly in the Highlands. Touchwood History is an oral history project which aims to capture first-hand memories of earlier times, based on recorded interviews with people who worked in forestry or whose lives were affected by it. Thousands of people across Scotland worked for 'the Forestry' over the years, and the touchwood History project, now well under way, is starting to collect and record their stories, told in their own words. It promises to be an important national archive of lively personal memories, the kind of material which is seldom documented in 'official' histories. Without it, much fascinating detail would be lost for ever.
