摘要

In recent decades deadwood has come to be recognised as a vital component of the woodland ecosystem. To gauge the health of these habitats, conservation managers need to assess the type and volume of deadwood present on their ground. A comprehensive survey of the semi-natural pinewoods of Mar Lodge estate found a mean volume of 30.2 m3 of deadwood per hectare. However there was a wide range of values between different stands, suggesting that some areas of the pinewood are substantially richer than others. This variation may be due to the long history of timber extraction and the relative isolation of certain stands, although evidence in support of this hypothesis is inconclusive. Comparison with published values from other sites suggests that, considered in their entirety, the pinewoods on Mar Lodge estate contain a good quantity of deadwood. However, British woodlands tend to be poorer for deadwood when compared with 'virgin' woodlands of Fennoscandia. Given that old-growth pinewoods are geographically limited in Scotland it is not recommended that deadwood be artificially created, however any natural recruitment must be retained and protected.
