The idea of holding an Enchanted Forest in Scotland followed the success of the Forestry Commission's Enchanted Woodland autumn light show at the Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury in Gloucestershire. Several locations in Scotland were considered before it was decided to hold the first ever show at The Hermitage, near Dunkeld. The idea behind the event was to help promote the woodland assets of the region, enhancing Perthshire's position as part of Big Tree Country. The idea was originally brought toScotland by The Forestry Commission and hosted by The National Trust tor Scotland. The Hermitage, with its spectacularly tall Douglas firs, held the first Enchanted Forest in 2002.
