The recently published Native Woodlands Survey of Scotland (NWSS) report2 has been widely acknowledged as an impressive document, and rightly so. There has been a huge amount of information gathered in a thorough and systematic fashion. The information is useful, and it is likely to inform both debate and practical delivery of projects for many years to come. It is a reference work that all types of land managers will come to value and respect. It is a record of a point in time, but one which can bereplicated and kept updated and which can be used to measure progress over a longer time frame.'Victor Clements is a woodland advisor working in Highland Perthshire, Secretary to the Breadalbane Deer Management Group and an Executive Committee member of the Association of Deer Management Groups.
