Scotland has a target to reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 80% compared to a 1990 baseline, as set out in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act of 2009. Woodlands can help us in meeting that target. In fact in 2011, Scotland's woodlands captured around 9 MtC02e from the atmosphere - around 15% of our GHG emissions. There is increasing recognition of the role that woodlands can play in locking up carbon, and creating new woodlands will further help Scotland meet its GHG emission targets. Low Carbon Scotland - the Scottish Government's document setting out how it will meet the GHG emissions targets to 2027, aims to increase the planting rate in Scotland from the current 7,000 ha / year in 2012/13 to 10,000 ha / year. If this target is reached then the 100,000 ha of new woodland planted by 2022 is predicted to have sequestered almost 5MtCO2eby2027.
