The personal video recorder (PVR) poses a dilemma for operators. Positioning and marketing the product to users who see no reason to pay for a subscription-based recording service has been tough, requiring a £20m (?30m) advertising campaign in the case of BSkyB. Yet once hooked, users are reluctant to part with the device, with the PVR "decreasing costs for operators since PVRs have proven to significantly reduce churn-rate. People value their subscription much more as they can watch when they want," says Rudy Roth, senior director, strategy and business innovation, Philips digital video set-top boxes.
