Set in what was once a volcanic crater it cuts a great swathe into Banks Peninsula and is ringed by starkly shaped, steep-sided hills and crags. All flat land is reclaimed. The port itself has many advantages, one of which is that the tidal rise and fall is very limited so that ships can get in and out any hour of the day. It is also close to the major South Island city, Christchurch, an important population and manufacturing centre. The port itself is one of very mixed functions. Its major export iscoal and in 2004 some 2.1 million tonnes were exported. This is railed from the West Coast and much of it is sent to Japan. On average five ships each month arrive with new or used Japanese cars which has seen the port just open a purpose built carterminal. There are also considerable exports of logs, meat, wool and fish. In 2004 101,000 tonnes of fish were exported, nearly as much as the combined total of wool and meat exports for the same year.
