摘要

The price of TYPE304, the most popular stainless steel, has been strongly influenced by the fluctuation of the nickel price. To solve such situation, JFE Steel Corporation developed a Ni, Mo-free ferritic stainless steel, JFE443CT, with high corrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance of stainless steels depends on the quality of passivation films on the steels. It is known that increase of Cr content in the steels leads to higher concentration of Cr in the passivation films and improves corrosion resistance. In addition to that, we have found the synergistic effect of Cr and Cu in the steels, which further enhances Cr concentration in the passivation films and repassivation after corrosion. Based on this finding, a new ferritic stainless steel, JFE443CT, has been developed, which exhibits equivalent corrosion resistance to TYPE304 in neutral chloride environment. Moreover, due to no addition of Ni and Mo, its price is stable even when the price of Ni and Mo soars. It is highly expected that, as a substitute stainless steel for TYPE304, the developed steel, JFE443CT, is becoming a versatile material which will be widely applied to kitchen instruments, cutlery, household electrical appliances, interior/exterior parts of buildings, automotive exhaust system parts, and other uses.
