Breeders describe progress in alfalfa research, from improving forage yields to making the crop a more favorable component in dairy rations. Behind the pasturelands and haylands of this country, there have been developments afoot to increase alfalfaforage yield and fiber digestibility, among several other research goals. Alfalfa garners less attention than corn and soybeans, but it remains one of this country's staples. In this article, breeders from leading US alfalfa breeding companies shed somelight on the progress of alfalfa research.
