Rain didn't dampen attendance at this year's IPSA Agronomic Training Day, Aug. 22, in Madison, WI. While wet weather kept most attendees out of test plots that day, 75 people heard several informative presentations at the University of Wisconsin's (UW) West Madison research station and Kaltenberg Seed Farms in nearby Waunakee. The IPSA group was welcomed by the UW College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Dean Elton Aberle. The West Madison station is one of about a dozen such stations located around the dairy state, said Aberle, adding that the 600-acre station serves as a center for basic breeding work in field and silage corn and sweet corn. To build a closer link between agriculture and the nearby urban community, the university has added horticultural test plots to the station. In addition to flower and vegetable trial grounds, UW conducts tests on ornamentals, such as hybrid poplars and viburnum varieties there.
