EAF steelmakers today face many challenges in a competitive and rapidly changing global market. For the melting operation, steelmakers are demanding improved process optimization based on a holistic approach. Factors to be considered are cost, total energy (electrical plus chemical), productivity, yield, environmental, etc. This paper will outline new developments at Tenova Goodfellow Inc. (TGI) for a dynamic process control and optimization system for the EAF based on a holistic approach and the results obtained at Ferriere Nord steel plant in Italy.
