摘要

The task of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is to keep the U.S. science and engineering enterprise at the very frontier of knowledge. This task is accomplished by recognizing and nurturing emerging fields, preparing the next generation of scientific and engineering talent and providing world-class research and related facilities. This three-pronged approach has led to many indisputable successes over the past 50 years. But NSF and the community it serves are more crucial than ever as our nation looks forward with new leadership and contemplates the many scientific challenges and opportunities facing the world. The ocean and basic ocean science play a integral role in maintaining this focus and achieving success for NSF's mission. This is especially important as the health of the ocean and understanding the ocean's role in climate change become ever more critical to society.
