Offerman et al. [Science 298 (2002) 1003] reported synchrotron diffraction evidence that the work for ferrite nucleation in an 0.21 percent C, 0.51 percent Mn, 0.20 percent Si steel transformed during continuous cooling is about 100-fold greater than that reported using isothermal transformation and classical nucleation theory (1988). Their result appears doubtful because of diffusion field overlap and technique problems.
