The isothermal age-hardening behaviour of ferritic Fe-20Cr-5Al and Fe-35Cr-5Al alloys with Ru additions of up to 4 wt percent was studied to establish whether a B2 RuAl-type (ordered b.c.c.) precipitate structure could be developed in the temperature range 723-1123 K. Significant strengthening was observed in alloys containing 2-4 wt percent Ru at 723K, although the ageing behaviour was more typical of '475 deg C embrittlement'. Age-hardening was observed for alloys containing 4 wt percent Ru at 923 K, associated with the development of a fine, semi-coherent plate precipitate structure, observed using TEM. However, the precipitates were found by EDS to be consistent with a Tower aluminide. No hardening was observed at 1023 K. In further experiments: (1) Decreasing the Al:Ru ratio by lowering the Al content did not effect age-hardening apart from the apparent '475 deg C embrittlement'. (2) Static oxidation tests at 1473 K showed divergent behaviour in the alloys; the rate of mass loss increased with Ru content in Fe-20Cr-5Al, but 4 wt percent Al minimised the mass loss in Fe-35Cr-5Al.
