A new era of ocean research is beginning, and the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences has a leading role. We see many opportunities and are well prepared to take advantage of the heightened awareness in Congress and the administration on the importance of basic research, as evidenced in broad support for growth in the National Science Foundation (NSF) budget. Over the last two years, the budget of the Division of Ocean Sciences has increased nearly US60 million, to the FY 2002 level of US281 million.
