A theoretical model that relates the ( gamma + alpha sub 2 ) two-phase equilibrium in ternary Ti-Al-X alloys to the substitution behavior of alloying elements in the two ordered phases has been suggested. The method uses experimentally measured occupation probabilities of the alloying elements on different sublattices as input, and allows estimates of the mole fractions of the two phases for a given alloy composition. Predictions of the stabilising effects on the gamma or alpha sub 2 phase of Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W etc. are made using site occupancy data measured in the author's group and elsewhere, and are compared with independent phase stabilisation results. Good agreement has been reached. In particular, the variation in the stabilising effect of Cr is explained by the strong composition dependence (especially on Ti/Al ratio) of the site occupancy of Cr in the gamma phase. The model has been validated by comparing predictions with experimentally measured phase fractions and phase boundaries, using a variety of ternary Ti-Al-X alloys.
