When Thomas Newman co-founded TerraSond Ltd. (Palmer, Alaska) in 1994, the idea of a terabyte (TB) of data seemed baffling in its magnitude. Nineteen years later, Newman's precision geospatial survey firm has collected data around the globe and serves clients from offices on three continents with increasingly advanced technology. TerraSond now deploys equipment that ingests raw data at the rate of gigabytes per hour and processing software that renders it in dozens of formats. Its servers now hold more than 50 terabytes of data collected from more than 15 countries.
