The annual world production of raw cashew nut is estimated to be 10 lakh tonnes, of which, India's contribution is 43 per cent (4.3 lakh tonnes). The next major producer Brazil accounts for 18 percent, followed by Vietnam 11 per cent and Tanzania eight per cent. (Balasubamanian 1998). Out of the total productive cashew area of 5.15 lakh hectares in India during 1996-97, Kerala ranks first with 1.18 lakh hectares (23 per cent) followed by Tamil Nadu with 15 per cent, Karnataka 14 per cent, Andhra Pradesh 14 per cent, Orissa 12 per cent, Maharashtra 10 per cent, Goa with 9 per cent. (Bhaskara Rao 1998). Kerala ranks first in cashew production with 1.34 lakh tonnes constituting 31 per cent, followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh with 19 and 14 percent respectively. On the productivity front, Maharashtra has the largest productivity of 1570 kg per ha. followed by Kerala (1135 kg per ha.) (Selvarajan and Dharmalingamm 1998).
