The U.S. Army Corps of Enegineers (USACE), as the "nation's water manager", has an important navigation mission and is committed to serving the nation's commerce. Its mission is to provide safe, reliable and efficient waterborne transportation systems (channels, harbors and waterways) for movement of commerce, national security needs and recreation. It is responsible for more than 25,000 miles of commercially navigable channels and maintains 926 shallow and deep draft harbors. On the inland waterways, USACE maintains 237 lock chambers at 192 sites. Through the ports and waterways move 2.2 billions tons of commercially carried goods annually. Approximately half of this amount is to or from foreign destinations.
