For at least several thousand years, the coral reefs of Belize have been dominated by three framework-building coral species. Thickly branching elkhron coral, Acropora palmate, was the primary species from the reef crest down to five-meter depth under all but the most energetic wave conditions: a more thinly branching elkhron coral, Acropora cervicornis, dominated intermediate depths; and massive colonies of at least three sibling species of the Montastraea annularis complex were common in a variety of reef habitats.
