Dr. D. Alexander, Director of Research, KAU, Dr. M.G. Bhat. Project Coordinator (Cashew) and Director, NRCC, Dr. Ahmed Bavappa, Dr. Jose Mathew, distinguished delegates, scientists, invites, media persons, ladies & gentlemen. You may be aware that India has the largest area in cashew and is also the largest producer, consumer and exporter of cashew in the world. Research on cashew started in India way back in 1950s. Efforts were intensified with the establishment of CPCRI in 1970 and starting of AllIndia Coordinated Spices & Cashewnut Improvment Project in 1972. Cashew research got further impetus with the establishment of the National Research Centre for Cashew at Puttur in 1986 and an independent All India Coordinated Research Project on Cashew with its headquarters at Puttur. Out of the nine Centres under AICRP on Cashew, two Centres are located in Kerala i.e., at Madakkathara and Pilicode and ICAR had taken this decision in view of potentiality of Kerala State for cashew production.
