Since the end of the Cold War a decade ago, the focus of naval strategy has shifted to littoral waters where the depths can vary considerably. In deeper littoral waters, the Cold War challenges of quiet submarines and torpedo countermeasures remain. In shallow waters, antisubmarine warfare is even more complex because of mines, terrorists, small undersea disel-electric vehicles and the turbulent acoustic environment. Taken together, these threats pose an enormous challenge to the Navy's undersea detection and weapons systems.~(1,2) Deployable sensor arrays and communication systems can enhance littoral undersea surveillance and protection capability.
