Abenthic elevator is a platform used to transport payloads from the ocean's surface to the bottom and back again. The general configuration of an elevator provides stability in the same way as a hot air balloon: The weight is down low, and the lift, or buoyancy, is up high. Benthic elevators employ some type of anchor on descent that is discarded on the bottom prior to ascent.
