The development of the Broadband Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (BB-ADCP~(TM)) allows a three-dimensional flow velocity profile (referred to as a transect) to be collected from a moving boat. The boat moves along the transects and the flow velocity vector will be measured depth-resolved. The location is determined by means of a global positioning system (GPS), so the flow will be measured with a high data density on the transects. This technology was initially used for discharge measurements where conventional measurement techniques were either too expensive or impossible to use. The advantages of BB-ADCP technique lead to a broad range of applications such as measuring depth and velocity patterns for bridge scour research, for sediment transport studies, for numerical model calibration and evaluation and for habitat characterisation. The demands on the quality of predictions on hydrodynamic processes are strongly rising in the light of safe navigation at restricted areas, an effective dredging management and also port development.
