The coordinated international Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) describes the present state of the sea, its contents and forecasts as far ahead as possible, underpinning climate-change forecasts. The system enables conversion of research into operational tools. Its products are useful to a wide range of users. Detailed descriptions of GOOS (Sea Technology, August 1997) and its many components are available at http://ioc.uneso.org/goos.
