Design and Development of a Smart Sensing Kit for the Detection of Accident Location Using Smartphone

Traffic accidents are one of the most common causes of death in the world. It is sometimes difficult to identify the location where a vehicular accident has occurred. It can also be difficult to determine after an incident occurs, if it was accidental or not. Usually, the deployment of a vehicle's airbag is very suggestive of an accident having taken place. Smartphones have many features that can help people manage many things. One of these features is global positioning system technology (GPS). The current study proposes an algorithm that combines Wi-Fi with GPS signals to produce a guide for locating the end-user of the application in the event of a vehicular accident. We tested this proposed approach in a real environment for one week, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Ten different locations were used for these tests within a city of United States. Our approach achieved good results in all ten locations. We concluded that, by using a mobile application, the average time interval between the occurrence of an accident and the contact made with the Emergency Services was 15 seconds. Additionally, we found that during the period of our study, the highest number of vehicular accidents occurred on May 01, 2014. The most common time for an accident on this day was 10:00 am, and the most common location for an accident was from 2-34 Hillpond Dr., Storrs, CT 06268, USA. The scope of the study was within Storrs city; however it can be used anywhere else with proposed infrastructure.
