With 361 ports and 95,000 miles of coastline, and with more than 95 percent of all international trade entering the United States via ships, there is plenty to monitor and protect. With marine imports totaling US738 billion per year-7.5 percent of the U.S. gross domestic proudct-and cost estimates of the impact of a recent port shutdown as high as US2 billion per day, U.S. international trade is considered America's Achilles' heel.
