The use of modern optical submarine telecommunication cables,and recent progress in related technologies,make it possible to develop versatile,next-generation scientific networks.These networks will provide electrical power and data transmission capabilities to instrumentation deployed on the seafloor.Researchers will be able to access this equipment in real time from laboratories,and provide continuous data from the sea-floor.
