It took three years, but Japan's Port and Airport Research Institute(PARI)has succeeded in the development of a new type of onboard oil recovery system.Development of the project(including financial support)has been in cooperation with the Shikoku Regional Bureau,Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport(MLIT),Japan. The system employs a high-power vacuum blower for sucking liquid into a gas-liquid multi-phase form. Its applicability to an onboard oil recovery system has been experimented with. The experiments have shown that this method can respond to a wide range of viscosity of spilled oil, performing well even in wavy sea conditions. These results have been applied to an oil skimming system mounted on Ishizuchi-an oil recovery vessel owned and operated bv MLIT.
