Remote sensing of oil spills has become an international affair and a key element for the protection of the marine environment.The ecological and economic effects of marine pollution on the coastal zone have been important catalysts for many coastal nations worldwide to establish airborne maritime surveillance services.Depending on the respective policies,the services may also cover tasks that are assigned to maritime traffic surveillance(e.g.,migration control,fishery patrol,exclusive economic zone protection,search and rescue and counterterrorism activities).
